Through all its many iterations over the years, die-hard adidas fanatics may have thought that the classic Superstar couldn’t find another breaking change. Well, Supe-fiends, think again.

Now a gum sole is nothing new when it comes to cult classic silhouettes from adidas’ archive, and a large variety of models all but rely on this design in order to accurately present themselves, however when it comes to the Superstar this is far from fair-play. Or at least it was in the past. What Originals have unveiled in the Spring season of 2013 is a bold and beautiful step forward for the shell-toe we all know so well, combining it with a clean looking gum sole and shelled toe box that really help to achieve a new, yet somehow familiar, look about the pair.

Released in a few different colorways, including the white and gum (not pictured), and the navy and gum pair featured here, there will certainly be some nay-sayers among the crowd, though from the murmurs we’ve heard so far, even the most hardcore of Superstar fans have expressed keen interest towards the new shift in structure and material.

With all that talk of innovations above, don’t be misled; this is not the first adidas have chewed some gum into their Superstar designs. As far back as 1995 we’ve seen various canvas versions of the Superstar 2 built in with a light gum outsole and mismatching darker shell-toe. Later in 2006 a variety of Superstar Skate’s were produced with even lighter gum units, and even 2007 brought a pretty weird Superstar 2 from the adicolor ranged (the interchangeable side stripes ones) with mixed gum and white outsoles and shell.

So for any of you out there that thought this was something ‘new’, it’s not, and it would seem that some gum in the shell-toe is one of adidas’ best kept secrets. Here at eatmoreshoes we’re glad to see it return.
