The turning point for most adidas collectors is quite arguably the release of the 35th Anniversary series, which debuted thirty five different versions of the adidas Superstar, organized into five series. One of which was the Expression Series, which included seven shoes from various boutiques and designer firms. The Bay Area design collective known as Upper Playground did their very first collaboration with adidas for this so-called ‘BBQ’ Superstar.
The shoe upper, tongue, and eyelet runways are printed with a white and red checkered pattern that resembles the design found on a typical picnic blanket, modified subtly with alternating miniature logos – the adidas trefoil logo and the Upper Playground walrus logo. The three side stripes are white leather with a shiny sliver set of utensils raised on them. The upper part of the heel is made of white leather and embossed with a black illustration of a BBQ grill, cleverly combining the trefoil and walrus logos. The heel strip is also white leather and has the letters ‘BBQ’ printed on it in black.
The outsole and shell toe are both chalk-colored and accent the shoe quite nicely. The fine touch is the small metal lace jewel embossed with the Upper Playground walrus logo. The shoe comes specially packaged like all the 35th Anniversary releases, in a white and black box with a map of all thirty five Superstars printed on the bottom. They come with white and red laces.
