Boombox & Sneaker Calendar
Finally it’s done! The Boombox & Sneaker Calendar 2012 is available, and it’s a must have for the next year. The idea first arose in 2010 when Thomas Mulsow created the 2011 Boombox Calendar. Based on its success it was quite clear that there has to be a new calendar for 2012.
Thomas, known by his stage name “Dreamz” (or DRMZ for short), is a German-born musician who studied product design. Since he was 17 or 18 years old he’s been a DJ, starting with hip hop records but progressing to breakbeat, dubstep, dancehall, reggae, and jungle. He’s now a producer and a photographer and working on a project called iLLBiLLY HiTEC.
The idea of the sneaker as a further feature for the calendar was an inevitable conclusion due to the importance both kicks and boomboxes have in hip hop culture. As well, this progression was a result of DRMZ’s living situation; his own room full of ghetto-blasters and his flatmate’s full of kicks. This was the initial point for the first theoretical sketches of the new project.
The 2011 calendar included pieces of only DRMZ’s own collection. So this time it was necessary to get other collectors on board. Chris Szymura Leal (trainer from the adidas Originals Store in Berlin) and I were responsible for the sneakers, and the ghetto-blasters were provided by collectors Max and Peter.
Early in September DRMZ started with the photoshooting. Primarily he wanted to find walls that would fit in terms with the colors and themes of the monthly sneaker and boombox arrangements. Most of the locations you can find at the Cassiopeia Yard in Berlin. The December sheet was shot in front of the MTV building, also in Berlin. Other locations he found in Dessau, Peter’s home town. All of the imprinted boomboxes are classics from the 80s.
In my opinion the Boombox & Sneaker Calendar 2012 is a perfect thing. All fourteen beautiful photos (including the cover and back banner pages) came out to fully represent the vibe and spirit of all things hip hop. Much respect to DRMZ for all of us here at eatmoershoes for this brilliant “kulturbeitrag” (cultural contribution).
