The Kegler silhouette was originally introduced in the 1980s with its main feature being a peg cushioning system allowing athletes to adjust the placement and amount of support in the heel. The shoe was mainly designed for sportsmen who played a German nine pin bowling game known as Keglen. Another feature of the model was the reinforced toe box for extra durability as Keglen players often dragged their toes.
In 2000 adidas released a dark brown ostrich skin version of the Kegler, complete with gold pegs, to celebrate Adi Dassler’s 100th birthday. The shoes were limited to 100 pairs and they sold for a retail price of 1900 German Marks (which was about 1000 EUR, 600 GBP, or 900 USD back then).
Some time after that, in 2007, another (quite similar looking) ostrich skin Kegler Super was released as a part of the Consortium Series. It featured an almost identical design to the original 2000 version, but with much less quality put into the materials. This is not to say it was bad quality, as it wasn’t, but the first pair from 2000 had authentic ostrich skin and even real gold in the stitching. The 2007 pair was also limited, this time to 350 pairs wordlwide, but of course bestowed a much more reasonable price tag.
And finally, the shoe returned again, as 2011′s B-Sides series aimed to revive special takes on adidas silhouettes from the past and remake them in a new perspective; such as this wonderful ostrich skin Kegler Super.
The Kegler Super Lux silhouette was shown some love in a light tan leather upper, textured with a reptile skin pattern, and a large, suede patch on the toe box that extends down and over the outsole. Slightly darker tan detailing of the adidas logo and trefoil appear on the tongue and heel patch. The shoes come with matching tan laces and three dark brown pegs inserted into the heel.
Released on the 17th of September, 2011, as a part of the B-Sides second wave, these kicks were quite limited and only available at select boutiques around the world.
